Spanish Wines:
 Amazing Wines for Amazing Prices

In my last couple of posts, I’ve discussed value wines.  They included less known, obscure Old World picks such as Vinho Verde from Portugal, and better known New World varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay from South America.  This time around, let’s continue the discussion with wines from Spain.

We’ve seen remarkable change in the quality of Spanish wines over the last decade.  An ever expanding and important global market has been one reason.  A generational change has also played a huge role in technique and winemaking style.  A new generation of Spanish winemaker is producing wines that appeal to a growing, sophisticated, world-wide market.

In Wine Spectator’s September 2015 issue, their staff tasted and rated some 150 Spanish wines.  The wines rated from the low 80’s to 97.  They were cited as well crafted wines; some ready to drink now, others that will continue to improve with years of aging.  Although some cost well over $100, most of these Spanish wines represent great value—with many around $10.  I would like to recommend four of my favorite Spanish wines; two reds and two whites.  I think you’ll find that these selections over-deliver for the price.

Tres Picos Grenacha Borsao Spain
The Wine Advocate: 95 - "The terrific 2012 Tres Picos is one of the finest inexpensive, Grenache-based wines made in the world. This full-bodied beauty boasts a deep ruby color as well as loads of strawberry and black cherry fruit, hints of lavender and crushed rocks, sweet tannin, and a broad, savory mouth-feel."

Bodegas Volver De La Mancha Spain
This single vineyard-designated Tempranillo has plenty of red cherries, blueberries, mulberries and red raisins, depicting grapes pushed to full ripeness without going beyond the boundary into excessive over-ripeness. The oak character is relatively elegant with toasty, coffee hints only, and the balanced wine shows some lingering length as well. Drink now or in the next five years.

Bodegas La Cana Albarino Rias Baixas Spain
Fermented in stainless steel (80%) and large format barrels (20%) with aging on lees. On the nose, mineral notes, lemon peel, spices confectionery, and floral announce this round and tasty white soft texture. With excellent volume and length, and an excellent price / quality ratio, you can enjoy for 3 to 4 years.

Bodegas Godeval Spain
Wine Spectator: 92.  This alluring 2013 white delivers a broad range of flavors in a pillowy texture, while crisp, well-integrated acidity maintains the focus. Melon, coconut, spice and smoke flavors mingle harmoniously on the plush palate. The mineral element is fresh and long.

Until a few years ago at Colonial, we carried only a handful of Spanish wines.  Today we have more than 70 and the selection is still growing.  Don’t hesitate to give them a try—the Spaniards are producing wonderful wines for you to enjoy.
